THE Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the central bank of Malaysia, is to train chief executives of Nigerian Banks, BusinessWorld Intelligence can now disclose. The training will also be extended to other top officials of Nigerian banks with the potentials of emerging as bank CEOs.
Competent Sources said the training programme will last for six weeks. The Nigerian Bank CEOs will be subjected to two weeks intensive training at three different locations, namely, Malaysia, United States of America (USA) and China.
Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, governor of CBN, said the bank would soon enter into mentoring agreement with his Malaysian counterpart. Apex Bank sources said the agreement is to formalize the relationship that has developed between the CBN and its Malaysian counterpart.
Analysts said CBN is desirous of ensuring that the Nigerian banking industry is put on a good stead to drive the economy. According to the analysts, the Sanusi-led CBN is not taking any chances in its resolve to ensure that banks play a more positive role in the overall development of the local economy.
According to the source, the move to have a working arrangement with BNM was informed by the desire of the management of CBN to reposition the apex bank in particular and the Nigerian banking industry in general. The source further disclosed that the mentoring agreement would enable CBN to have access to BNM materials.
BNM is touted as one of the best performing apex banks among developing economies of the world. The bank is said to be the chief driver of the economic transformation of the Asian country. BNM is said to have a three-year Business plan that provides strategic focus which drives specific outcomes, strategies and action plan which in turn enables performance tracking across the bank.
Analysts said the key lessons CBN is likely to learn in the proposed working relationship with BNM include that capacity enhancement must be viewed in a holistic sense of people, process, structure and technology, that change must be led from the top as well as the clarity of the desired end game.
